Then again at 6:15pm. Now, twenty minutes later, baby is rooting against your chest, fists at their mouth, working themselves up toward the cry that means they want to feed again. You look down at your baby, then at your partner, and you say the thing that almost every breastfeeding mother says at some point in the first weeks.

I don’t think I have enough milk.

If this is your evening right now, if you have been feeding what feels like constantly since the sun started going down, if your baby seems to want the breast every 30-45 minutes and shows no sign of stopping, if you are exhausted and starting to doubt your own body — I want you to hear this clearly before anything else: this is almost certainly cluster feeding, and it is one of the most normal, most healthy, and most misunderstood things a breastfed baby does.

It does not mean you have no milk. Instead of the two-to-three-hour gaps you might expect, baby wants to feed every hour, sometimes every 45 minutes, sometimes what feels like almost continuously, with only brief pauses in between.

It happens most often at a specific point in the day, overwhelmingly, for most families, in the late afternoon or evening, often right around the time you are trying to make dinner, manage other children, or simply catch your breath after a long day. Many mothers describe it the same way: my baby basically lived on my breast all evening. And honestly, that description is not far from accurate.

Why your baby is doing this — and why it is intelligent, not desperate

The instinct, when a baby feeds this frequently, is to assume something has gone wrong, or that your milk has dried up, that baby is not getting enough, that your body has somehow failed at the one job it is supposed to do right now. I understand exactly why that conclusion feels so immediate. But the biology underneath cluster feeding tells a very different story.

Breastfeeding works on a supply-and-demand system. The more frequently and thoroughly milk is removed from your breast, the more strongly your body is signalled to produce. Cluster feeding is your baby actively building the supply they are going to need in the days ahead, not because what is currently available is insufficient, but because baby somehow knows, through mechanisms more sophisticated than either of you can consciously perceive, that more is coming and more will be needed.

This intensive feeding pattern shows up reliably around specific points, the early weeks in general, and particularly around 2-3 weeks, 6 weeks, and 3 months, the classic windows for growth spurts. During these stretches your baby needs more calories to fuel a burst of physical growth, and cluster feeding is the mechanism that gets baby there. It is not a malfunction. It is the system working exactly as designed.

Breastfeeding is also never only about nutrition. It provides warmth, comfort, security, and a kind of nervous-system regulation that babies cannot yet manage on their own. Evenings, in particular, tend to be overstimulating, the accumulated sensory input of an entire day catching up with a baby whose ability to process and calm themselves is still very immature. Feeding is one of the only tools baby has to bring themselves back down from that overstimulation, and using it intensively in the evening is not greed or manipulation. It is the most effective regulation strategy available to them.

There is also a quieter physiological piece worth knowing: milk composition and availability shift naturally across the day, and many mothers notice their breasts feel softer by evening, after a full day of feeding. This can feel alarming, when thinking softer breast, surely less milk, but softer does not mean empty. Many babies compensate for this natural daily rhythm by feeding more frequently in the evening, drawing on a supply that is still entirely sufficient even though it feels different to the touch than it did first thing in the morning.

What it actually looks like, in case you are wondering if this is what is happening to you

A cluster-feeding baby feeds repeatedly over a short window. Baby may fall asleep briefly at the breast, only to wake again minutes later wanting more. Baby becomes fussy or distressed the moment they are taken off the breast, even if they just fed extensively. Baby can seem, for a few hours, completely impossible to put down. If this matches your evening, you are very likely watching textbook cluster feeding rather than a sign that anything has gone wrong.

The myth that ends more breastfeeding journeys than anything else

I want to address this directly, because it is the single most damaging misunderstanding in breastfeeding, and it is responsible for more unnecessary formula introductions than almost any other factor.

My baby keeps wanting to feed, therefore I must not have enough milk.

This is, in the vast majority of cases, exactly backwards. Frequent feeding is very often precisely how a strong, well-established milk supply is built and maintained. The baby who feeds constantly in the evening is not telling you that your body has failed them. Baby is actively working with your body to ensure it produces what they need next.

The danger in misreading this signal is real. Introducing a bottle during a cluster-feeding stretch… because it seems like the obvious solution to a baby who “won’t stop feeding”… interrupts exactly the demand signal your body needs at that moment to build supply. The next evening, the cluster feeding may be even more intense, because the underlying need was never actually met, only delayed. Supplementing through cluster feeding can become a cycle that erodes supply rather than the relief it appears to offer in the moment.

How to know your baby is actually fine, beyond the feeding frequency itself

Rather than measuring how often baby wants to feed, look at the indicators that genuinely tell you whether they are getting enough overall. Wet nappies (at least 6 heavy ones daily from day five onwards) are your most reliable daily measure. Steady weight gain over time, tracked at their checks, is the clearest longer-term indicator. Periods of genuine alertness when baby is awake, rather than constant lethargy, matter too. And audible swallowing during a feed — that soft, rhythmic gulp once milk has properly let down — tells you that, cluster feeding or not, milk is actually being transferred when they are at It is a finite, intensive period that resolves once your supply has adjusted and your baby’s immediate growth need has been met.

How to survive an evening of cluster feeding

Lower everything you expected of yourself for these few days. This is not the evening to cook an elaborate meal, deep clean the kitchen, or answer every message that comes through. Your job, completely and entirely, is feeding your baby and getting through this stretch. Everything else can wait.

Build yourself a feeding station before the evening starts, if you can predict when it tends to hit. Water within reach. Snacks you can eat one-handed. Your phone charger. The remote control. Burp cloths. You may be sitting in one spot for a long stretch, and having what you need nearby means you are not getting up and disrupting a feed that was finally settling.

Accept any help that is offered, in whatever form it comes. If someone offers to cook, say yes. If someone offers to hold the baby for the ten minutes after a feed so you can use the bathroom in peace, say yes. If your partner offers to bring you dinner on a plate you can eat from one hand, say yes. You do not need to manage this stretch alone, and there is no version of motherhood that requires you to.

Stay hydrated yourself, particularly through a long feeding stretch. Keep water specifically next to wherever you feed, and drink from it every time you sit down, almost as a reflex alongside latching baby on.

And trust the process, even when it is exhausting. Your baby is not trying to break you. Baby’s body is doing something intelligent and temporary, working in partnership with yours.
