Some children at 15 months have more than this. Some have fewer and are still developing within the typical range. The number matters less than whether language is progressing, whether new words are appearing, whether baby is attempting to communicate intentionally even when the words are not yet clear.<\/p><p dir=\"ltr\">By 18 months, the typical range expands considerably: most guidelines cite between 6 and 20 words for monolingual children, with the caveat that children acquiring two or more languages simultaneously (which most Mauritius toddlers are, moving between Creole, French, and English) may have a slightly smaller vocabulary in each individual language while their overall communicative vocabulary across all languages is entirely typical. This can be expressed as clingy daytime behaviour, increased night waking, and distress at drop-offs that was not present a few months earlier. It is developmental, not regression, and it eases as they understanding of your return and the permanence of your relationship becomes more secure.<\/p><p dir=\"ltr\">By 24 months, most toddlers show empathy in its earliest forms, like attempting to comfort a distressed person, noticing when someone is hurt, beginning to understand that other people have feelings. They engage in parallel play, playing alongside rather than with other children, which is the age-appropriate precursor to the cooperative play that comes later. You see your baby every day. You know what they were doing last month.
