This is a legal right, not something you need to negotiate or ask for as a favour, it should be part of your return-to-work conversation with HR or your employer, stated plainly rather than apologetically. If your workplace doesn’t already have a clear policy on this, you’re allowed to be the one who asks for it to be clarified, in writing, before your return date.

Practically, this means time set aside during your working day to pump, and ideally, though not always guaranteed depending on your workplace, somewhere private and hygienic to do it. If your workplace has no dedicated space, a closed office, a meeting room booked for the purpose, or even your car with the seat back are workable substitutes, not ideal, but workable, and worth sorting out before your first day back rather than improvising it under pressure.

Building your freezer stash before you go back

Start around week six to eight, not the week before you return. If you’re covered by the extended 26-week leave once it takes effect, the shape of your return changes in a few useful ways, not just the date it happens on.

Your baby will likely be six months or older rather than four when you go back, which for many babies means breastfeeding is more established, latch issues from the early weeks have usually resolved, and solids may already be starting, all of which tend to ease the pressure on your freezer stash, since a portion of daytime nutrition may already be coming from food, not milk alone. The building-your-stash advice still applies, just with a longer runway and, for many mothers, a smaller daily volume actually needed by the time you return.

One caveat worth sitting with rather than glossing over: transitional details, whether the extended leave applies only to births on or after 1 January 2027, or how it’s phased in for mothers already on leave at that date, weren’t fully settled in what’s public so far.
