If you are reading this in the first days or weeks after your baby was born, I want to say something before anything else.
You are in the hardest part.
Not the hardest part of motherhood, though it genuinely feels that way right now. The hardest part of the transition. The part where your body is doing something enormous and quiet and largely invisible while you are also learning to care for a person who depends on you completely, in a body you no longer recognise, on less sleep than you have ever survived on before.
The fourth trimester (roughly the first twelve weeks after birth) is the stage that receives the least preparation and the least support in Mauritius. Most women leave the clinic with a handful of pamphlets and a six-week follow-up appointment. What happens in between is largely left to chance, to family advice that may or may not be current, and to Google searches at 3am from a phone held one-handed over a feeding baby.
This library is what should have been in those pamphlets.
It covers everything across the fourth trimester and beyond: physical recovery after vaginal birth and caesarean section, breastfeeding support, newborn care in the Mauritius climate, the mental health reality that nobody discusses openly enough on this island.
You do not have to read it all now. Find the section that is most urgent for where you are today. Come back tomorrow for the next one. And if what you are looking for is not here yet, it is coming. Subscribe to the Nutura newsletter and new articles will reach you as they are published, in the right order, at the right stage.
One more thing: if you are experiencing thoughts of harming yourself or your baby, please do not scroll through this page looking for an article. Contact Befrienders Mauritius now: 800 93 93, it’s free. That is the most important link on this entire page.
