Before my daughter was born, I made a list.
A long list, assembled from various parenting websites, a WhatsApp group of other pregnant women and the products being actively marketed to me in the third trimester by every algorithm that had identified me as an expecting mother. By the time I had finished, I had listed forty-three items. Forty-three things I believed were necessary before my baby arrived.
She needed, in reality, about twelve of them.
The parenting product industry is extraordinarily good at manufacturing anxiety and selling solutions to it. A new parent is a perfect customer: sleep-deprived, hormonal, deeply in love with someone who cannot tell them what they need, and surrounded by other new parents who are also buying things. In Mauritius, add the cultural layer, the family gatherings where everyone has an opinion on what you should have purchased already, the baby shower wish lists, the pressure to provide everything new and the spending pressure is significant.
This library exists to cut through it.
Not with judgment toward anyone who has bought the bouncer and the wipe warmer and the seven different types of muslin cloth (I only used 1 at most). But with honest, Mauritius-specific guidance about what genuinely makes a difference to a baby’s safety, comfort, and development and what was invented to part new parents from their money.
Your baby needs warmth, nourishment, safety and YOU. Everything else is context. And that context can be managed thoughtfully, on whatever budget is real for your family, without compromise to your baby’s wellbeing.
